1880's to 1960's__edited.png

Below is my final garment bringing an 1880’s Victorian dress into the Mod context of the 1960’s. I wanted to create a garment which broke free from the restraints of the Victorian fashions of the 1880’s. To ensure this I chose to place it into a context which is known for its societal freedoms and reforms for women. When designing my garment, I kept the aspect of heavy decorations that was prevalent within Victorian dress. Not only did this make it uncomfortable in terms of the sheer volume of fabric Victorian women were dealing with, but it also added to the weight of the garment. I chose to create my decorations or bows out of a light taffeta material as a contrast. What really brings the Victorian dress into the mod context is the shift silhouette, which displays a loose-fitting garment from the armpits down. Not only is it’s silhouette a complete contrast to a Victorian dress, but the length is too. I am really happy with my design and the overall message behind it. I wanted to convey women’s lack of a role within society in 1880’s, and the prominent change in the 60’s. But I also think it’s important to still show the amount of work for women’s equality we have ahead of us as displayed in the girlish nature of my design and the contrasting colours.
